About the book
Abu Hayyan al-Tawhidi was a great writer and philosopher, but his knowledge and literature did not receive enough attention during his lifetime. He even burned most of his works before his death, so only a few of them have reached us. One of the most important of those remaining works is the book that we have in our hands today, the writing of which had a story told by Ahmed Amin (one of its investigators). Abu al-Wafa al-Muhandis was a friend of al-Tawhidi and close to one of the ministers, so he brought al-Tawhidi close to this minister. After thirty-seven nights of chatting between the minister and al-Tawhidi, Abu al-Wafa asked al-Tawhidi to tell him what happened in that chat, otherwise he would banish him and punish him. He actually put those nights in this book, which he called “Al-Imta’ wa al-Mu’anasa.”
A chat that brought us a series of interesting topics that were not subject to arrangement or classification, and included enjoyable anecdotes, and were considered, in their entirety, a mirror of the land of Mesopotamia in the second half of the fourth century AH.
